George A Marks Jr

George A. Marks Jr. is a New England impressionist landscape painter with studios in both Needham and Chatham, Massachusetts. Born in Boston and raised in an artistic family (his mother was actively painting well into her nineties), he received his education at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York.
Working primarily with acrylics on canvas, Marks is largely self-taught but influenced by early American impressionists such as Willard Metcalf and Dennis Miller Bunker and contemporary painters including Thomas Aquinas Daly and Curtis Hanson. Over the years, he has worked to support his art in a variety of ways including seasonal hunting and fishing guide, state porcupine bounty hunter, estate caretaker and government tree farm worker. An avid fly fisherman and outdoorsman, he draws his inspiration from his native New England which he says offers an impressionistic landscape painter an infinite variety of challenges.
Past president of the Cambridge Art Association and a long-time member of the Copley Society (currently inactive), he was selected to be included in the Guild of Boston Artists first annual juried New England Representational Painting and Sculpture Show. Solo exhibitions include Winstanley-Roark Fine Arts, Brewster, MA, Libby Museum, Wolfboro, NH, Stebbins Gallery and University Place Gallery, Cambridge, MA. Group shows include Guild of Boston Artists, Cahoon Museum of American Art, DeCordova Museum, and Attleboro Art Museum. Two of the artist’s paintings were included in the 12th Annual International Fine Arts Show, an annual exhibit of work from 40 of the top galleries worldwide.
The recipient of numerous awards for both painting and drawing, his work is included in many private and corporate collections both here and abroad and appears regularly in the well-known Gray’s Sporting Journal where he is one of the Journal’s featured artists. The artist is currently represented by Renjeau Galleries in Natick and Florentine Galleries in Weston
