Joyce Bantock

Joyce Bantock

I was born in Edinburgh, grew up in Vancouver and went to Art College, first at Ravensbourne and then Canterbury. Having received my BA in Textile Design I went on to work at a design studio in Great Portland Street, London.

Back then in the early ‘80s, all designs were painstakingly hand-painted on paper with gouache. From my perspective, it was an elegant art, and I truly loved the hard deadlines imposed by the rag-trade. Variety and invention were at a premium and consequently we were encouraged to pour out an unending stream of ever changing designs.

Today textile design is almost exclusively digital, but for me that mechanical way of working holds little pleasure, so for the time being I’ve turned my attentions to mixed media, old papers and acrylics. The work you see here, represents the infinity of potential that a more hands-on approach to the craft of pattern offers.
