Gale Pitt
Gale was born in 1938 and grew up in a rambling old rectory in a village called Thornhaugh, in rural Cambridgeshire. As an only child, living deep in the countryside, she had a solitary childhood and started to fill her days with painting and drawing from an early age. Gale loved reading too, which fed her imagination and enabled her to see the world without leaving home. After studying English literature at Oxford University, which was quite an accomplishment, she decided to pursue a full-time career as an artist despite the fact that she had no formal art training. She was constantly creating new images and never seemed to be stuck for fresh ideas. Some of her children’s strongest memories are of seeing her bent over her watercolor paper, listening to the radio with a cup of strong tea at her side. She was always painting and drawing.
Gale delighted in noticing the quirky and amusing sides of ordinary life, many of which are reflected in the detail of her watercolor paintings. Nothing escaped her observation, and her rich imagination transformed the world around her into a buzzing hive of fun, intrigue, and activity. Gale loved to travel to exotic places, meet new people and spend time with her three grandchildren, Amaia, Ty and Luka. She adored her cat, Trevor. Gale sadly died in 2011, leaving hundreds of beautiful images, bursting with her lively imagination and full of her rich life experiences. She would be happy to know that they are still bringing joy into the lives of people all around the world.
